Rapier & Dagger, and Unarmed: For Beginners

Learn how to fight for stage, screen and motion capture.

Suitable for beginners, or those with no previous British Academy of Dramatic Combat (BADC) qualifications, and those wishing to renew an expired BADC Standard certificate.

You’ll focus on how to move your body safely and effectively both with and without a weapon, in order to tell a violent story with accuracy and dynamic action.

You will learn how to communicate with a fight partner in the moment, and how action and text combine, as you work towards the performance of a fight scene.

DATES:
Monday 15th to Friday 19th and Monday 22nd to Wednesday 24th March 2027
9am - 5pm. No classes on weekends; Monday classes finish at 4pm.
VENUE:
The Thanet Youth & Community Centre, Malden Road, Herbert St, London NW5 4HD.

WEAPONS COVERED:
This course will cover Rapier & Dagger and Unarmed combat techniques.
This is an intensive course:

  • Students will spend up to 50 hours learning to safely perform fight choreography in each of the prescribed fight disciplines.

  • The nature of this course is on combat in performance, and as such it will also focus on acting skills, with students working on incorporating their fight choreography into dramatic scenes.

  • Exploring topics such as character intention, fight rhythm and staging, students will learn to create a fight in which they are connected and truthful in order to deliver an engaging and dramatic piece of theatre to an audience.

Students will have the opportunity at the end of the course to certify with the British Academy of Dramatic Combat at Standard level.

The test fee is included in the course price.
